In December 2023, Chris chose a 1:1 supported holiday with WanderAble, taking a 4-day cruise to Moreton Island. Though nonverbal, Chris communicates through simple signs, a big smile, and an even bigger heart.
On the first day, people weren’t quite sure what to make of his habit of smiling and hugging strangers. But by day two, everyone began to see what we already knew—Chris only wanted to share love. His joy was contagious, and he quickly became a familiar face around the ship.
By day three, other adults on the cruise were calling him by name, inviting him to join the cruise director in dance circles. Whenever the music played, Chris was in the middle of it—dancing, laughing, and encouraging others to do the same. When he needed a break, he would sit with strangers just to enjoy the company and pass along encouragement.

At Moreton Island, Chris experienced something unforgettable. After arriving on a tender boat, he went up in a helicopter to see the shipwrecks from above. His happiness in the air was written all over his face. Back on board, he “told” everyone he met—signing excitedly—that he had been in a helicopter. By day four, almost everyone who passed him in the halls or elevators knew his name and greeted him with hugs or high fives.

Chris became an ambassador of joy, showing what supported travel can do—not just for the traveler, but for everyone around them. His story is also a reminder of what the NDIS once made possible. Supported holidays like this were funded in the past, but with changes to the scheme, people must now cover the trip costs themselves, which puts experiences like Chris’ out of reach for many.

At WanderAble, it’s our dream to keep opening doors for people like Chris—to give them opportunities to see the world, share their joy, and remind us all of the power of a smile, a hug, or a high five.
